2 Day Workshop: "THE ABSENT BUT IMPLICIT - A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION IN THERAPEUTIC CONSULTATION"

Workshop Content:

People consult counsellors/therapists about a range of predicaments, crises and problems, with an expectation that this will bring relief, and with a hope for resolution. Many of these predicaments, concerns and problems are pressing and serious, and are often associated with feelings of despair, futility and hopelessness. In the face of both these pressing and serious problems, and these expectations and hopes for relief and resolution, therapists can wind up feeling ‘stuck’ and at times ‘weighed down’. This can be a common outcome, even when therapists are committed to assisting people find their own ways forward rather than attempting to solve problems on people’s behalf.

The key narrative concept of the absent but implicit can bevery helpful when therapists are feeling ‘stuck in’ or ‘weighed down’ by problem saturated stories, often manifesting in feelings of burden, fatigue, burnout or in what has recently been described as ‘vicarious trauma’.

This concept of the absent but implicit can provide a basis for the development of conversations that are both an antidote to these negative therapist experiences, and that provide people with a foundation to proceed to address the predicaments, concerns and problems of their lives in ways that are in harmony with what is important to them. The absent but implicit is associated with an understanding that every expression of life is multilayered. These layers can be explicit or implicit. The concept of the absent but implicit invites therapists to consult people about the more implicit layers of the expression of their predicaments, concerns and problems. This can be invigorating for both the therapist and the people who seek consultation.

In this workshop Michael will review the concept of the absent but implicit, and various categories of the absent but implicit will be defined. The scaffolding of conversations that draw out the multi-layered nature of people’s expressions will be described. Various illustrations of the relevance of this concept to therapeutic practice will be given through stories and videotapes of interviews. There will also be some focus on the relevance of these ideas in working with community members living with mental health concerns.
